This plugin adds a widget that shows a grid of pill-shaped buttons, each a link to somewhere staff go often: the expenses system, the room booking page, the payroll portal, the canteen menu. It suits a homepage column or a landing page sidebar where a short, prominent list of links is wanted without icons or images.
Add the widget
Activate the plugin under Plugins, then go to Appearance, Widgets and drag (Govintra) Popular links into a widget area. Give it a Title, such as “Popular links” or “Quick links”, or leave the title blank for buttons alone. Then add the links in the Popular links box that appears under the widget:
- Select New button.
- Enter the Link title, the words on the button. Keep it short, two or three words, so the buttons line up.
- Enter the Link URL. This can be a page on the intranet or a full web address of an outside system.
- Switch on Open in a new window for links that leave the intranet, so staff keep their place.
Add as many buttons as you need, drag them into order by their handles, and select Save. A button with no title or no address is skipped.
What the widget shows
The buttons in the order you set, three across in a wide column, two across on a tablet and one above another on a phone. The widget area’s own title style is used for the title. The widget prints nothing until it has at least one complete link.
When to use something else
- For links with icons, or links that open a panel of information in place, use the (Govintra) Services launchpad.
- For a grid of picture tiles inside a page rather than a widget area, use the cardgrid shortcode.
- For the tasks staff use most, the (Govintra) How do I widget lists them automatically.
