Intravert guide

Intravert analytics

Every click on an intravert, and every time one is dismissed with the cross, is sent to your analytics as an event, if your intranet has Google Analytics or Matomo installed. Nothing is sent on an intranet without analytics, and nothing identifies the person.

The tracking code itself goes in the intranet options, under General, Header scripts. See General intranet options.

What is recorded

In Google Analytics the event is called intravert. It carries four pieces of information:

  • intravert_name: the title you gave the intravert.
  • intravert_action: “click” when someone selected the button, the image or a link in the content, or “dismiss” when they used the cross.
  • intravert_title: the address of the page the person was on. The field keeps this name from earlier versions of the theme so that existing reports still work.
  • intravert_location: which widget showed it, such as govintra_intraverts-3. Use it to compare positions.

In Matomo the event has the category Intravert, the action “click” or “dismiss”, and the intravert’s title as its name.

See the results in Google Analytics

  1. Go to Reports, Engagement, Events and select intravert. The count is every click and dismissal.
  2. To break that down by intravert, page, position or action, register the four fields as custom dimensions once, under Admin, Custom definitions, with the event parameter names above. Google starts collecting them from that point; earlier events are not back-filled.
  3. Then add a dimension to the Events report, or build an exploration with intravert_name as rows and intravert_action as columns.

Reading the numbers

  • Clicks against dismissals tell you whether the message landed. Many dismissals and few clicks means the intravert is in the way rather than useful.
  • The page tells you where an intravert works. The same intravert often does better in a task sidebar than on the homepage.
  • The widget position lets you compare two placements of the same intravert.
  • An intravert is hidden after a click or dismissal for its cookie period, so one person counts once per period, per browser. See Create a bank of intraverts.

Views are not recorded, so you cannot calculate a click rate from analytics alone. Compare intraverts with each other over the same period instead.
