The Jargon buster template turns a page into a glossary: every jargon buster entry on one page, in alphabetical order under letter headings, with a letter bar for jumping about. It is normally applied to a page called Jargon buster or Glossary. To apply it, edit the page and choose Jargon buster under Page Attributes, Template. The Jargon buster module must be on: go to Options, Modules and switch on Jargon buster, which adds a Jargon busters menu to the admin. There is no landing page option for this module.
What the jargon buster page shows
The page title, then the letter bar, then the entries. The bar shows 0-9 and A to Z; letters with entries are links and the rest are greyed out. It sticks to the top as the page scrolls and highlights the letter currently in view. Selecting a letter scrolls to that heading. Each entry is shown as the term in bold with its definition beside it. The content typed into the page’s own editor is not shown, and there is no sidebar or widget area. Every entry is on one page, without page links, so the page suits a glossary of a few hundred entries. When there are none it says “No jargon definitions found.”
Long definitions and Show more
A definition longer than about four lines is cut short with a fade and a Show more button; selecting it reveals the rest and the button becomes Show less. Without JavaScript the whole definition is visible.
How entries are ordered
Alphabetically by title, ignoring case. An entry whose title starts with a digit goes under 0-9, which comes first. The first character of the title decides the letter, so give each entry the title people would look for: the acronym itself (“FOI”) rather than “The FOI process”.
What each entry draws on
Each jargon buster entry is a small post under Jargon busters in the admin menu. The title is the term. The content is the definition, which can include formatting, links and images. Featured image and excerpt are not used on this page. Each entry also has its own page at /jargon-buster/term/, which is where a link from a search result or from another page lands. Whether entries appear in intranet search results depends on the post types chosen in Relevanssi’s indexing settings. See Add an item to the jargon buster.
Who can add entries
Contributors can write entries for review, authors can publish their own, and editors and administrators can edit and publish anyone’s. See Roles and capabilities.
Options that affect the jargon buster
Only the Jargon buster switch under Options, Modules. Switching the module off hides the menu and the content type; nothing is deleted, and switching it back on brings the entries back. See Module settings and options.
