The Hashtags template collects everything that carries one chosen tag and shows it as a grid of cards, newest first, whatever kind of content it is. It is made for campaigns and themes that cut across the intranet, such as a wellbeing month, an office move or a transformation programme: tag the news stories, events, blog posts and pages as you publish them and the page keeps itself up to date. You can also hand-pick pages to feature, and they are spread evenly through the grid.
Choose the template in the Page Attributes box, as in Change a page layout, and the Hashtag settings box appears below the editor.
Hashtag settings
Hashtag
One tag from the site’s tags. The page shows the most recent content with that tag from news stories, news updates, blog posts, events, pages and posts. It does not include tasks. The tag is just an ordinary tag; nothing needs a # in front of it. If the tag you want does not exist yet, create it by tagging some content first, then come back. See Learn how tags work.
The tag is optional. With no tag chosen, the page shows only the highlight pages and spots below, which makes it a simple hand-picked grid of cards.
Number of posts
How many tagged items to show, from 1 to 100. The default is 12. Highlight pages and spots are extra, on top of this number. There is no paging, so the page always shows the most recent items up to this limit.
Highlight pages
Pick pages, tasks, events and blog posts by hand. Each becomes a card shown in a highlighted style, so it stands out from the tagged content, and the cards are spread evenly through the grid rather than bunched at the top. Use them for the campaign’s own landing page, a form, a policy or a video that should always be visible however much tagged news arrives. A highlight page that also carries the tag is only shown once, as a highlight. Only published items are shown.
Spots
If the Spots plugin is installed, pick spots here. A spot’s content is shown in a highlight card, in the same way as a highlight page but without a title or link, which suits a short promotional message or an image. Without the plugin the box has nothing to choose from and can be ignored.
What the page shows
Anything typed in the main editor appears above the grid, across the full width. When the editor has content the page title is not displayed, so start the content with a heading of your own. With no content, the title is read by screen readers only and the grid starts at the top.
The grid has four cards across on a desktop screen, two on a tablet and one on a phone. Each card shows the item’s featured image, its title as a link, and its excerpt trimmed to twenty words. Blog post cards also show the author’s photo and name, and any card with comments shows a count linking to them. Give tagged items a featured image and an excerpt, or the cards look bare.
How highlights are spread out
The highlight pages and spots are inserted into the grid at even intervals: with twelve tagged items and three highlights, a highlight appears after every fourth card. If there are more highlights than tagged items, the highlights are shown after the tagged items. Reordering the highlight pages in the settings box changes the order they appear in.
Tips
- Agree the tag before the campaign starts and tell everyone who publishes. A near-duplicate tag, such as “wellbeing” and “well-being”, splits the content across two tags.
- News updates carry tags too, so short updates can feed the page between longer stories. See What are news updates.
- For a page built around a team rather than a tag, with blocks of different content types in columns, use the Aggregator page template instead.
