The featured image is the image that represents a piece of content around the intranet. It is separate from any images inside the content itself. For those, see Add an image to a page.
Where the featured image appears
- At the top of a news story, blog post or other item, above the text.
- In the news widgets on the homepage, including the top story.
- On listing pages, category pages and landing pages that show content as cards.
- In search results.
- In the preview card that appears when someone pastes the page’s address into another page.
You can set a featured image on pages, tasks and guides, news stories, news updates, blog posts, events, projects, vacancies, training courses, teams and jargon buster entries.
Set the featured image
- Edit the news story, page or other item.
- Find the Featured image box. It is in the right-hand column, usually near the bottom.
- Select Set featured image.
- Upload a new image, or choose one from the Media Library.
- Fill in Alt Text for the image.
- Select Set featured image.
- Select Update or Publish to save.
If you cannot see the Featured image box, select Screen Options at the top right of the screen and tick Featured image.
Choose an image that will not be badly cropped
Listings and widgets show featured images as cards, and every card has the same shape. The intranet trims each image to fit that shape, working from the centre. A tall or square image loses its top and bottom.
- Use a landscape image, wider than it is tall. A 3:2 shape, such as 1200 by 800 pixels, suits the standard card shape.
- Make the image at least 1200 pixels wide so that it stays sharp at the top of the story.
- Keep the important part of the picture, such as faces, in the centre.
- Avoid images with text in them, such as posters and banners. The edges are likely to be cut off, and screen readers cannot read the text.
The same image can look different in different places, because the top story, the smaller cards and the story page each use a different size. Check the homepage as well as the story after you publish.
Administrators can change the card shape for the whole intranet with the Card image ratio theme option. The choices are 3:2, 16:9, 4:3, 1:1, 3:4 and Original. The sizes WordPress creates are set in Settings, Media. See Change the standard image sizes.
Alt text and captions on featured images
Add alt text in the Media Library when you choose the image. If a featured image has no alt text, Govintra uses the page title instead.
If the image has a caption in the Media Library, the caption appears under the featured image at the top of the story. Use it for a photo credit.
News stories with a video or audio player
If you set the format of a news story or blog post to Video or Audio and add a media link, the player appears at the top of the story instead of the featured image. See Feature a video in a news story.
Tasks and guides without a featured image
Administrators can set a Default image for tasks in the theme options. It is used on category listings that show tasks as cards, for any task that has no featured image of its own. There is no default image for news.
Change or remove the featured image
In the Featured image box, select the image to choose a different one, or select Remove featured image. Then select Update.
If the featured image does not show in a preview
Select Save Draft first, then select Preview again. If the featured image is still missing from the preview, check that the image is showing in the Featured image box. An image that shows in the box will appear on the page once the content is published.
